Outline of Shari Town

Shari is a town of fishing and agriculture located in eastern Hokkaido and looking out on the Sea of Okhotsk. The town is famous for the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage Site.

Location and transport

Shari Town is located at a longitude of between 144.33 and 145.22 degrees east and a latitude of between 43.44 and 44.21 north.
Shari is a town located on the eastern side of Hokkaido and facing the Sea of Okhotsk. It shares the Shiretoko Peninsula with Rausu Town. It takes approximately 60 minutes by car from Memambetsu Airport, and approximately one hour and a half by airplane from Memambetsu Airport to Tokyo International Airport.

Industry

Agriculture, fishing and tourism are the main industries of the town. Upland field farming is conducted there and mainly produces wheat, sugar beets and potatoes, making the Shari Plain one of the breadbaskets of Japan. In the fishing industry, the salmon yield from the Sea of Okhotsk, which is rich in marine resources, is the largest in the nation. In addition, the food processing industry is also prosperous in combination with the primary industry.

World Natural Heritage Site, Shiretoko

The Shiretoko Peninsula was designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Ice floes reach the Shiretoko Peninsula, the most southerly point in the Northern Hemisphere reached by such floes, and the area’s unique ecosystems and various animals and plants closely associated with the ice floes are highly valued. The town has been involved with National Trust projects for a long time to protect the forests in Shiretoko.

Tourism

Approximately 1.6 million tourists visit the town every year. Utoro District, the center of tourism, has many large and small lodgings with access to hot springs. By car it takes 20 minutes from Utoro to Shiretoko Goko, where visitors can stroll trails and experience the nature of the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage Site. Seafood is another of the area’s attractions for tourists.
