この滝には川がなく知床連山に降った雪と雨が地下に浸透し、垂直に切り立った約100mの断崖の割れ目から流れ落ちています。ホロホロと流れ落ちるさまが涙に似ていることから、地元では「乙女の涙」という愛称で親しまれています。
知床自然センターから遊歩道を歩いて片道20分程です。また、積雪期は、歩くスキーやスノーシューなどでトレッキングができます。
近年すぐ近くにある滝が「男の涙」として紹介されていますが、こちらには陸上からは行く事はできません。観光船など海上からご覧ください。
Near Utoro lighthouse, we have a
vertical precipice. And the origin of the Furepe waterfall is this place. It
is about 100m high, and the clean water falls from the crevice of the precipice toward the
surface. The streaming situation reminds us of tears, therefore it is nicknamed “OTOME-NO-NAMIDA".
When we put the nickname into English, it is expressed "Girl's tears".
The nickname is very popular in our town. Certainly, even if another town,
the Furepe waterfall is called "Girl's tears" generally. This episode of
the Furepe waterfall is characteristic of Shiretoko national park. Primitive nature
in Shiretoko peninsula often gives such an episode us. |
